New instagram post

My #startrekstory is that I don’t remember a time from before Star Trek. I was raised on Next Gen, and I saw myself in so many of the characters—Beverly and Deanna, strong and complex women; Wesley, whose inclusion meant a kid could be important and helpful and part of the crew—but it was Data I had the #startrek makeup books checked out of the library for. Data was the hero for every kid who didn’t fit in, who didn’t pick up on sarcasm or know how to react to a joke. I held it together through taking this picture, but afterwards I stood in line to meet Brent Spiner a complete mess, visibly fighting the urge to break down and sob. I had not anticipated that reaction—it’s completely out of character. Next Gen has a special place in my heart, but I love all the Star Treks for all the different things they bring to the table. And I need them more than ever today, because the message of Star Trek from the beginning has been this: We dare, we have the AUDACITY to believe that humanity is better than this. That we can fix our planet and our society and go on to be explorers, not an army colonizing planets, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s hopepunk at its finest. Like anything, it has its flaws, but Star Trek will always be like family. Happy #StarTrekDay and #startrekunitedgives https://instagr.am/p/CE4gBExFtOs/

Painted Angels: Jegudiel 1

I was throwing together some glass for Jegudiel at the end of class and I didn't have time to full fuse four separate wings first and then tack fuse them in pairs. But of course I wasn't going to just throw them out. So I spent way too much time on this for 'throw together a painting' and I will be redoing it when I can get back into Workhouse (which is currently closed due to coronavirus. The buffer means y'all won't be getting this post until June, fingers crossed that things have calmed down!).

Painted Angels: Uriel (complete)

Uhhh...you can't win them all?
LOL, for real, my habit of just grabbing whatever color had to come back to bite me in the ass at some point. But hey, proof of concept! The glass dried on the wings great!
I plan on a second Uriel at some point, one using at least some of the iconography and a more sensible color scheme.

Painted Angels: Zadkiel (in progress)

So these wings were GOING to go on Jegudiel. I was going to full fuse these (make into one sheet of flat glass), decorate with frit to give the barn owl markings, and then make another set out of transparent glass to put on top. But...I love these as they are too much. So they're going on Zadkiel instead and I will do something else for Jegudiel.
I'm getting good at painting! But I would like to remind everyone that I can't draw, that these bodies are TRACED and then painted in.

Painted Angels: Barachiel--in progress

Mar '20. I'm really proud of this one--you can't tell in the photo, but I somehow managed to get the shading on her face to suggest a nose. She's going to have flower petal wings.

Painted Angels: Assorted glass wings

Feb-Mar '20. Using my glass class to make a whole bunch of wings for angels. All of these will come up later in more complete posts, but who knows how long it'll take to actually do them!

Corning!

So I went to the Corning Glass Museum with my queerplatonic partner and it was very cool! All kinds of glass there: blown, lampworked, fused, stained. Part science museum, part history museum, part contemporary art. We even got to make our own glass flowers. Thinking to try this in miniature on the torch. Even got to see a celebrity--Janusz (pron. yah-noosh) Pozniak from Blown Away on Netflix! Pardon me while I just photobomb here.

These are glass knives hanging above a tiny town. It's about living under the threat of terror.

Glass and ceramic. It's about sleep.

Yes, this is made of glass.

Universe

Happiness is...looking up at the sky only to find the universe staring back at you
I'm taking a fused glass class at the local glass house. Here is my first completed piece (that wasn't a test)! Bullseye glass, full fused and sandblasted. No metal involved, despite appearances. Doesn't photograph well, but trust me, it's cool. Feb '20

End of the World

I have no idea why this is called that. It's like when you're writing, and your character makes some decision that's not convenient for the plot, but you can't talk them out of it.

Uses the corner bits of several vases I destroyed to get at the glass. This is why I save my sharps bag even when I think there's no way I'll use this.

Painted Angels: Gabriel (in progress)

My first really neat angel! This is Gabe, he's gonna have mirror. Pictured are the original drawing and an in-progress paint job.
Body: Some guy I found on google images. I want to be really up front here that I have no drawing skills beyond 'fairly skinny person at a three-quarter angle.' Most of this non-abstract work is resized, manipulated, traced, carbon-transferred to canvas, and then painted. Which still means it doesn't look all that much like the original, but yeah.
Wings: Pigeon.

Painted Angels: Eagle wing

So strictly speaking this isn't an angel, it's an eagle, fresco. But I was doing the study of the eagle wing in order to figure out how to really do fresco for the angels, so...
All this shadow? Actual shadow because 3-D. No shadow-painting skill necessary. Nov-Dec. '19.

Jumping off schedule to show you the blue angel, because I don't love it. But it is very much glass on canvas--my first attempt at doing precisely that.
